Why Immigration Enforcement Alone doesn’t solve our Immigration Problems

Why we need Immigration ReformWe can’t use an enforcement only approach to solve our immigration problems.

  1. Despite President Obama deporting about 3.4 million people in the first six years of his administration, we still have over 11 million people in the U.S. without authorization.  Removal is at an all-time high.
  2. Customs and Border Patrol has built over 700 miles of fencing by 2014.  There is still more to be built.
  3. We have a record of border agents.  In 1992 there were approximately 4,000 agents on the border.  In 2014, there were 20,863.  That is a huge increase.
  4. We have more surveillance aircraft (including drones) marine vessels, lighting sensors, video, and radar systems on the Southern border than ever.

There comes a point of diminishing returns.  Sure we can and probably should complete the border fence. But does having a militarized border solve our problems?  When do we have enough technology on the border?

These solutions don’t do anything to address the fundamental challenges.

Enforcement doesn’t change the fact that families are waiting as many 20 years to be reunited with loved ones!  Enforcement only isn’t helping businesses hire the worker they need to grow their businesses.  Enforcement only doesn’t address what to do with the over 11 million people who are in the U.S. and don’t have a way to legalize their status.

We need Immigration Reform to solve these problems.
