Where are the unaccompanied minor children coming from?

Historically, the overwhelming majority of the unaccompanied children come from Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador.  Unaccompanied minors can come from any country; this is where the lion’s share has come from in the past.

The recent unaccompanied minors are coming from an area in Central America known as the “Northern Triangle,” from Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador. According to U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), 52,193 unaccompanied children were apprehended at the southwest border between October 1, 2013, and June 15, 2014.
