One of the largest concerns that those who oppose welcoming Syrian refugees into America have is that our nation doesn’t need more immigrants. Leaving the bias of that statement alone, the statement is actually false. Refugees that come to America are not immediately granted citizenship, but are rather given the status of being a refugee. They are given work authorization and can apply for a green card after being in the U.S. for 1 year, but when they first come over they are given a probationary status that makes it clear that they are not citizens yet nor are they illegal immigrants. After they have been in the United States for 5 years, refugees are permitted to apply for citizenship, and if approved they are then able to work their way into our society and become integrated citizens.
