It’s Yiddish, a mix of German and Hebrew, that traditional Eastern European Jews spoke. This Yiddish expression, “Tracht gut vet zein gut” translates into “Think Good, and it will Be Good.” A friend Blaine Oenklers teaches something similar, “What You Think About, You Bring About.” Both of these expressions refer to the power of positive thinking.
Self-help books all have some version of the power of positive thinking, and I have written about it in these emails. It is like a muscle; the more you practice positive thinking, the easier it becomes. But it surprised me that there were old Jewish sources, like the quote in Yiddush, that explains what I have been learning for years in secular sources.
This Yiddish expression, like the secular ones, encourages positive thinking and a focus on hope and optimism. Positive thinking is reflected in various Jewish prayers, teachings, and beliefs, such as the idea that every person can do good and improve and the emphasis on gratitude and rejoicing in one’s blessings. Additionally, the concept of “Bitachon” or trust in God, is central to Jewish thought and encourages individuals to have faith in a higher power and to view challenges as opportunities for growth and spiritual advancement.
Positive thinking has many benefits, including improved mental health, increased resilience, better relationships, and a more optimistic outlook. When we focus on the good in any situation, we are more likely to see opportunities and find solutions to challenges rather than dwelling on problems.
Positive thinking is not about ignoring or denying the challenges and difficulties that life can bring. Instead, it’s about recognizing challenges as a natural part of life and focusing on the good, even when things get tough. It is a habit that takes time and effort to develop, but with practice, anyone can learn to “think good, and it will be good.”
By focusing on the good, we can create a better outcome, improve our mental health, build stronger relationships, and find happiness and success in all areas of life. So, next time you face a challenge, remember to think good, and watch as it becomes good.
