What are the DREAMers and the DREAM Act?

DREAMers is a nickname given to unauthorized immigrants who meet the criteria of the Obama Administrations deferred action initiative for youth, meaning

  1. They are under the age of 31;
  2. Entered the United States before age 16;
  3. Must have been 30 years old or younger on June 15, 2012 (this requirement was elimated under the 2014 rules, so it only applies for those applying under the 2012 rules);
  4. Have lived continuously in the country for at least five years (either since June 15, 2007 or January 1, 2010 depending under whih program you are applying for);
  5. Where in the U.S. on June 15, 2012 and without legal status;
  6. Are currently in school, graduated from high school, earned a GED, or served in the militar; and
  7. Have not been convicted of a felony, a “significant” misdemeanor, or three or more misdemeanors.

They are given this nickname because many of them also meet the general requirements of the Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors (DREAM) Act. This bill was never became law, it remains just a proposal.  Not everyone who fulfills the requirements for Preaident Obama’s deferred action initiative meet the requirements for the DREAM act as well, but the name has been bestowed upon the entire demographic.
