What are the Consequences for Domestic Violence in NJ?

Domestic violence s a title given to a crime against a partner in a relationship.  The punishment for this crime depends on the base crime committed.  For example, a domestic violence case involving assault would carry the punishment of an assault case, where as a domestic violence case involving kidnapping would carry the punishment of a kidnapping case. It is important to know this, as the severity of the crime is what dictates the severity of the punishment.

Any case in Municipal Court carries a maximum of six months of jail and a fine of $1,000.  The majority of domestic violence cases are heard in Municipal Court.  However, indictable charges (meaning more serious offenses) would be heard in the Superior Court.  The consequences depend on the severity of the charge from a fourth degree offense to first degree murder.
