The Violence Against Women’s Act or VAWA gives a qualifying immigrant the following benefits:
- Allows you the victim to remain in the United States and eventually obtain lawful permanent residency (a green card).
- Provides you work authorization document
- You can then apply for a social security number
- You can apply for a driver’s license
- You can receive certain public benefits
- More importantly, you don’t need the abuser’s help in achieving any of the above
