Gov. Chris Christie signed legislation on June 27, 2013 that will raise fines for texting or phoning while driving without a hands-free device, with local governments and the state splitting the revenue.  It will increase the present $100 fine to:

  • First offense:  $200 to $400
  • Second offense:  $400 to $600
  • Third or more offense – $600 to $800.  Can suspend the license for 90 days and will get 3 points.

The new fines go into effect in 13 months.
